Free Traffic

Understanding and getting

Free Traffic

Hello everyone, I hope your holidays were great and the New Year brings good things.  I want to open up the New Year with a topic that can help all of us get more visitors to our web pages, free traffic. There are many ways to generate free traffic.  Traffic= Sales, No Traffic= No sales.

If you know of any ways for free traffic that aren’t listed here in this post let us know by leaving a comment.  If you disagree with anything let us all know.  Anything related to free traffic getting methods, let us all know.  What works for you?  Let us help each other out.  We  can all get some insight and learn something.

Getting free traffic to what you have online involves work.  You just can’t put something up on the web and think people are going to come to it.  It just doesn’t work that way.

If you put your web site, squeeze page, blog etc.. on the web and you don’t do something to get traffic to your content it will just sit there on the web, like putting something on a self and forgetting about it.

If you don’t want to do a lot of work  for traffic then pay for it.  There is nothing wrong with paying for traffic, it works but some don’t want to spend the money or some people do both.  What do you do?  What works for you?

Remember as I said before there is work to be done if you want to send free traffic to your blog, website, squeeze page etc…  I will outline some free traffic getting methods for you to wrap you mind around.  I hope you get something out of it.  I hope we can all get something out of it by leaving your comments.

List Building- All you do online as an Internet Marketer should be geared toward building your mailing list.  It is most important.  Building up a list of people who are interested in who you are on the web, your products, affiliated products, blog, website is very powerful because these people are letting you know they are interested by submitting their email address to you.  You can’t narrow it down any further when working with a list of people who have raised their hand letting you know they are interested in what you have to offer, great for traffic,  great for  sales.  The bigger you grow your list, the better.  There is a correct way to do this.  You can find out all about it on a recent post I wrote titled Why is a Mailing List Soo Important?

Blog Commenting- Blog commenting on blogs you are interested in and leaving your views not only creates back-links which is good for search engines but you can create a very good lasting relationship with blog owners and others.  When you leave a quality comment on someone’s blog everyone sees it and it’s a great way to get the blog owner and other people to know who you are.  The more you blog comment the better it is for your own blog or website because of the back-link that is created.  When you leave a blog comment the blog owner and others can come and visit your blog to leave comments and check out what you have.  Become popular by blog commenting and your blog will become popular.  John Mc is setting a very good example of what I’m saying here,  Check out his post http://johnmcnally54.com/december-blog-traffic/ You can also find out more about this topic by checking out a post Thu Nguyen wrote on her blog- http://www.bloggingfor.info/the-3-types-of-blog-visitors/

Video Marketing- There is an enormous amount of video websites out on the web.  http://www.youtube.com is very popular.  The more videos you post on Video websites, the better.   Be creative and intelligently provide value by creating a video that can lead to a squeeze page, blog, website, anywhere you deem necessary.  If the video is good you can generate some good free traffic for yourself. You don’t have to use a video camera if you don’t want to. You can use your photos, your music, even video clips and make a really good professional looking slide show. There is a website http://www.animoto.com if you want to create a slide show video.  To expand further about video marketing John Edwards wrote a great informative post http://john-edwards-blog.com/video-marketing-has-a-powerful-viral-effect-in-traffic-generation-and-profits/

Social bookmarking- Anywhere a whole lot of people get together to discuss various subjects is where you can get involved and use keen marketing strategies.  Provide value, get involved and recommend, do not blatantly advertise.  Get to know the rules of each website you sign up with.  For more information on this Steve Deerfield wrote an interesting post- http://stevedeerfield.com/social-bookmarking-for-internet-marketers/ so did Bill Murney, when  you read his post read the comments through they are very insightful- http://billmurney.com/blog/social-networking-yes-or-no/

Affiliate Marketing- Creating your own informational product and having affiliates promote it for you with related links within to your blog, website even another info product can bring in traffic and/or sales.  The related link or links within your informational products can spread like a virus.  The more sales you and your affiliates generate the more the links within get passed around.  One thing I want to make you aware of depending on what you’re writing about, one must keep related links to a minimum otherwise your informational product will just look like one big advertisement instead of an informational product which is supposed to provide value.  Outright advertising is a big turn off.  Fran Aslam wrote a very good informative post about affiliate marketing- http://franstips.com/online-affiliate-marketing-internet-income-and-top-rated-affiliate-program-of/

Article Marketing- Article marketing is very powerful if done right.  There are an enormous amount of article websites out there.  I know it’s a lot of work however submit articles to as many article websites as possible.  It is worth it.  All successful marketers use article marketing to generate traffic.  Make sure you follow the rules of each individual article website.  Articles must be your own work, not copied.  At the end of your article there is what is called a Bio Box- that’s where you explain who you are and leave a link to your related content.  To expand on this Andy Beveridge wrote a very good informative post- http://powerblogtactics.com/how-to-write-an-article/

Forums- There are forms on the Internet about any conceivable subject you can imagine.  Getting involved with online forums will bring in a good amount of traffic to your related subject matter however, you just can’t blatantly advertise.  You must get involved in what’s being talked about, provide value, ask questions, answer questions and develop a good reputation.   This will bring traffic to any links you strategically provide. When signing up with a particular forum you will have the opportunity to create a user name and provide links to your website.  Always understand the rules before joining any online forum for what you can and cannot do.  A very good and most popular forum for Internet marketers is the Warrior forum You will see a lot of successful marketers there.  You will also learn a lot too, it’s a great place for learning.  Got a question or problem insert a post, get an answer.

eBay- There is an enormous amount of traffic that comes to eBay.  eBay will only allow you to ship a physical product so your are going to have to put your information product on a disk.  Within your information product disk you can provide strategically placed links to your online content, even to your squeeze page to build your mailing list.   The main strategy about eBay is to sell a low priced item which leads to your higher priced item off ebay through the use of  links.  Another strategy would be to sell a bunch of your products, even affiliate products on one disk at a reduced price.  You shouldn’t only be out to make a sale.  Using strategically placed links within your information products disk can provide you with traffic to your online content.  The Barry Wells blog explains more, go through his blog and you will come up with some very good information about eBay and other eye opening information.   In his recent post he is offering a free eBay eBook http://barry-wells.com/if-you-are-new-to-ebay-try-newbies-auction-profits-free/ from John Edwards who also has a great blog with a lot of eBay information.

  3. If you need to buy traffic, I’ve always wondered if fiverr could work for something like that. Then again, there’s always that problem of it not being top quality.

Simply networking seems as a good way now to bring in free traffic.

It’s easy to see that you have done your homework and you present it in such an easy to read and understand manner.

But mostly I love the way you incorporated other great blogs into your content. There is so much good information out there that we really don’t have to be experts at everything, we just need to know how to lead our readers to the experts. :)

I have been to all those blogs and they are indeed worth a visit.

  8. That’s a very comprehensive post on traffic Terry, and thanks for the mention pal.

Traffic is a subject I need to master, I can create products but marketing is my downfall. As you point out it takes work and although I have made a start at article submission I know I have to do more in this field. Video marketing and social networking are other fields I will have to take more seriously.

I have retired Terry and there’s still not enough hours in the day. I don’t know how people with full time jobs find the time to really succeed at IM, I suppose if money is the incentive you will always find the time.

  10. You might as well put Wikipedia up there Terry (although it’s not suitable for all kinds of websites)
For me, I own a website teaching the German language, thus I went to Wikipedia, edited all the pages related to the German language, and added a link to my page within the “External Links” section.
Now I’m getting about 20 – 25 uniques a day from there alone. That’s over 600 uniques a month by just spending a few minutes there :)

  11. Hi Terry,

My key tip to add to your traffic tips is near the end of my comment … and it just happens to be part of recent post :-)

Isn’t that just what everyone desires! Free traffic. Better still, targeted traffic with their credit card out ready to buy.

The problem I found is that most people who visit IM style blogs are looking for advice on how to improve some aspect of their IM. Some may decide to purchase something, especially if there’s a wide array of product reviews and testimonies and a good community feel about the blog.

I don’t spend any money on traffic as I do not have any sales page that is ready for pay per click type traffic. That is tricky stuff. You need to be sure of your conversion ratio on squeeze and sales pages before going down the paid traffic path unless of course you have a budget for it and you just want people to come by for a visit.

Blog commenting is good for building relationships and extra traffic. I use it a fair bit – sometimes too much and don’t get around to posting anything on my site :-(

I am all for creating your own product. I have two WordPress plugins. One is free and on the WP site the other I sell via a sales page. BOth have links back to my blogs/support desk, etc.

I haven’t used articles, forums or eBay but then I spend a fair bit on my own products and getting them ready. That is my plan for 2011 – develop more products – with a few more blog posts to keep the blog alive :-) If you’re interested, here is a list below in Terry’s reply to me. I am working on here with an invite for people to beta test each one for free when it comes out.

Markus makes a great point that I try to keep at the front of my mind. All the techniques in the world might get 1000’s of people hitting your site but if what they read is cr*p it’s all wasted effort. So write quality stuff and you sure have here.

    So, on to my tip.

    >> Install a sitemap plugin on your blog, register with Google Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap. Read more about it in my latest post :-)

Hi Terry, I got here at last.

I hope that you had a great Christmas and new year my friend.

You’ve covered some excellent resources here Terry. I haven’t paid for any traffic yet other that on Fiverr, where i paid for someone to send people to my YouTube videos.

Like you i haven’t got started on Facebook yet but may do at a later date. At the moment i just don’t have any free time as i’m with my mum 24/7 so my traffic efforts are zilch these days, but that change as soon as i can get back to normal.

I’ll be visiting Michael at nine95.com as he always has some great tips to help us in our quest for success. Like him i have installed a sitemap plugin and my Alexa ranking improved straight away.

One tip I can add for you Terry, start a twitter list of like minded people and as you add people to the list they’ll come to your blog to find out about you, but you must be sure to offer value in your posts (as you do very well) so as to keep them entertained when they land.

All the best for 2011 Terry, catch up again very soon my friend,

  16. Hi Terry,

Getting traffic is one of the essential things and if it’s free and targeted it’s going to put a smile on anyone’s face.

Your list is nearly complete except for Facebook as Sally pointed out. The problem is that one cannot do all those things at the same time.

Article marketing is said to work less now then it once did and it is very time consuming.

It also takes some time for the articles to get approved.

Commenting is probably a more effective way to get some traffic and get to know other bloggers at the same time.

The best way to approach traffic is to focus on one or two methods at a time and see what works best for you.

Sometimes what works for one person the best doesn’t do that much for the other.

Yes, you can’t just do all what’s outlined in this post all at once. It’s just too much work. Although these points outlined in this post will bring in traffic if you keep at it. Devoting some time intelligently everyday will get results. Then you can analyze the results and see what works best for you.

Thanks for the heads up on article marketing but nevertheless it is still effective. I believe it’s something that can not be ignored. After some time you will know if it’s right for you. I believe it is.

Commenting is something that you should keep up at and never stop. The more you do the better. I believe it is very effective if done right and a biggie in getting free traffic. One good thing about it besides bringing traffic is that at the same time it is a great learning springboard as well.

  18. Well done Terry. I believe you have created a ‘pillar’ post here. A comprehensive resource for anyone looking for free traffic. It could generate your blog new visitors for years. 8)

You mustn’t let Sally bully you, I don’t use Facebook or Twitter either. Bill also doesn’t bother. BUT I have got a Facebook and Twitter account.

Whenever I leave a blog comment and see a Twitter or Facebook bookmark/tweet button (I’m not sure what they’re called) I CLICK IT. That’s it, I don’t do anything else.

My brother visited me today, and he thought I was on Facebook all the time? I was puzzled, :o so I had a look, and my home page had loads of comments from me! All those buttons I clicked worked!

That’s all I do, and that’s all I want to do, thankyou.

Like Bill, I’m a full time blogger, but even I can’t do all those things you mentioned. Here’s what I do for free traffic:

    Post 4 times a week
Comment on 75 blogs a week

Even on a smaller scale, say part time someone copying what you do will see results.

At the very least doing what you can to work your blog by posting and commenting one will see results. Your blog is living proof of the power of posting and blog commenting.

Sally isn’t bulling me because I do believe anywhere people get together about certain topics is ground for free traffic be it twitter, facebook, digg, even forums.

Taking it at my own pace and see how it goes. As Vance said what may work for some may not work for others. Barry Wells gave me a good tip about creating a list on twitter. I like learning inside tips because they can’t hurt and only help. The more you know the better.

What I do know is that blog commenting is very effective and the fastest way to get free traffic but it’s not the only way. Time will tell. Catch you later John.

Hi Terry, I like the list. Blog commenting is my favourite way to get traffic. The other thing you didn’t mention is putting links to other blogs into your post. I’ve had quite a bit of traffic that way, similar to leaving comments on blogs, but an added incentive for the blog owner to visit you.

    Enjoy the journey.

  22. Hi Terry,

Those are basically the building blocks to driving constant traffice to any site. I am glad Sally mentioned Facebook because that can be a very powerful method. (see my last blog post).

The one thing to avoid is traffic exchanges. This kind of traffic will be next to useless. Not targeted and often the visits you do get are only doing so through an incentive. That is if it is human visits at all.
I know this information may sound obvious to most of us that have been marketing for awhile, but anyone new does need to know it.

    Hi Terry

A comprehensive list for free traffic to our sites. Others ways are Guest Posting on other blogs. You are introduced to the blog owner’s readers and if they like your content they will probably go visit your site. I have gained new readers and traffic from Guest Posting.

Also if you write content that is unique and not same old, same old fluff that can be found on too many blogs out there; you will soon get noticed and have regular readers too. Make sure you target your keywords and have a catchy headline also.

Interestingly I thought the majority of my traffic was coming from blog commenting; however when I check my Google Analytics, it was Google sending me organic traffic. I was encouraged cos it means people are looking for relevant information and were finding it :-)

Twitter and Facebook if used properly can also get you traffic as you interact and join in on both these social media sources. I know I am getting an increasing amount of traffic from Twitter and now I am building my Facebook profile, so expect to be getting targeted traffic from there also.

It takes time to build decent traffic. And then we have to get targeted traffic if we want to monetise and build a business. But firstly we need to have patience and perseverence to build our authority. Just my 2 cents :-)

You’ve created good traffic to your blog so I think Google knows about it. I’m getting a small amount of organic traffic here. I hope in time it gets better and better. It sure does take some time.

I just installed the Google XML Sitemaps. Barry Wells and Michael Pedzotti turned me on to it, sounds pretty good.

I joined twitter but need to know more of the inside stuff to make it work better. Barry Wells suggested I create a list on there so I did, lets see what happens.

Sally Neill got me to sign up for face-book. I need to know the ins and out about that as well. Will be setting things up soon.

It sure takes time to build decent traffic, then as you said targeted traffic if you want to monitize. There is no magic bullet. I have work to do.

Thank you for your insight, I’m sure myself and all of my readers will always benefit from it. Catch you later Patricia.

Hi Terri, excellent article and comments! Free traffic sources and methods have become a number one topic online and there’s seems to be no limit to the various ways that people are implementing traffic techniques. I don’t do video marketing yet but I have a pretty good feeling about it’s potential to bring a major traffic boost to anyone who does it well.

Currently I’m concentrating on social bookmarking as a means to increase blog traffic but more so as a means to increase my page rank and Alexa rankings this year. (Thanks for the hyperlink Terri ;-) )

I’m also starting to put together some branded ebooks of mine and then submitting them to free ebook directories as a way of getting fresh new traffic to my blog. Here’s a list of sites that allows it’s users to submit their own ebooks:

    free-ebooks.net
    getfreeebooks.com
    ebookmall.com
    ebookdirectory.com

I’ll let you know how these sources work out for me after a month of testing.

Using good keywords is also important and should be placed strategically in your post. (example: like I did in my title and opening paragraph)

One should not go overboard with keywords though, don’t go using an obvious large amount of the same keyword. It must all flow naturally. The search engines bots can and will pick this up.

That was a very comprehensive list. For me when generating traffic is a combination of traffic volume vs. expended effort (some strategies are effective but time consuming), quality of traffic and quite frankly the enjoyment of the process. It takes time for example to write a good comment but it’s enjoyable and people who enjoy or appreciate your comment are probably the type of people you want to connect with. It can be the start of some really good friendships. Thanks for a good blog.
