Get Free Traffic using Twitter
Free traffic Twitter
Good for business? What do you think?
Some marketers hate twitter, but they still use it because it works in bringing in traffic.
When Twitter first came out I felt it was unessential for my business. How could it bring in free traffic to my website? Most marketers still feel this way. Could it be because of not understanding and not having the correct information?
When trying to find out about all this, I’ve realized everyone has their own views. Some say automation is not good, some say it is. Some say an automated direct message is great, some say it’s not.
I guess it all depends on what will work for you. I’ve come to the conclusion that there is no right way or wrong way but you sure have to have some knowledge to know how to work Twter to cut through all the twter confusion and make your own decisions.
Get a pen and jot down key important points here so the next time you’re on Twter you can have a good understanding about what to do.
(I want to get my message across but don’t need to be penelized for keyword spam so for the purpose of this blog post Twitter will be spelled Twter
)
If the reason you’re not into Twter is because you think, who cares what I had for lunch today. Well you’d better think again because Twter is big and growing every day and you don’t really have to let people know what you had for lunch.
Instead, just like in email marketing provide value. I’ve been doing some homework on the subject and want to share my findings and I’d like it very much to know what you think about Twter. Add something by commenting so we can all learn something new.
Whether you like Twter or not it’s everywhere! On the news, in advertisements on and offline. Businesses and major corporations are jumping aboard this band wagon and so should you!
I can understand why Twter can turn a lot of people off. Using it can be very frustrating because it seems all you see is an endless sea of fluff.
If you provide great content on Twter you will stand out because there is a lot of mambo jumbo on there.
Weeding out the good stuff and providing good stuff is the key for making Twter work for you.
Look at Twter from the standpoint of getting quantity over quality because it can grow to be a very crowded confusing place, bottom line Twter works.
If you are going to use Twter for quality people it’s just going to grow to the point where it’s going to be difficult to keep up with each individual person. Yes get quaility people but when you grow it’s going to get out of control. Select as many quality people as you can and keep tabs on them. Make a list if you wish.
On the other hand, looking out for and giving out quality is very important. The larger the number of followers you have the bigger your network. The bigger your network of followers the better everyone is likely to see your tweets.
As a marketer I’m sure you’re hearing about Twter a lot these days. Are you utilizing your traffic streams to full potential? If you don’t do something about it, you will most definitely be missing out on free traffic, meeting new people, building your list and making sales.
Here’s a good way to look at Twter so you’ll be able cut through what seems to be like a crowded mall during Christmas time.
What is Twter? It is a microbloging site meaning people can read and send other people updates (tweets) up to a 140 words. So how many times did you go to the bathroom today? That’s what I first thought when I first heard about Twter.
There are many ways you can use Twter depending on your needs. People sign up for it for many different reasons. It can be used to stay connected with family, friends from all over the world. School mates, work mates, groups etc..
It can also be used for business and to stay updated with professionals or it can be used to get huge exposure. Provide value and people will get to know who you are.
Same rule that applies for list building applies for Twter. Don’t sell all the time. Outright selling should be kept to a minimum it will turn people off. It will also turn Twter off. You can get your account suspended if done too much, especially if you are sending out direct messages to everyone about your product (spaming).
There is a right way and a wrong way to do it. If you do it the right way you will get lots of followers. As for us marketers we should open an account based on our niche.
In fact we should open several accounts based on variations of the same niche or if you have other niches it’s a good idea. The point here is Twter has limits on how many people you can follow.
You can only follow 10% of the people following you. For example: If you have 2000 followers you can only have 2200 people following you. Having other accounts you can get more people following you thus more followers over all and still keep your Twter limits sound or the way you want them to be. It stands to reason for the most part when you follow someone they will follow you back.
Every one is different and I try to keep the people I’m following lower than the people that are following me (my followers). That way I’m not only safe with the limits but it also shows you have more followers. I think it’s a good thing for people coming to my Twitter account to see.
I see a lot of good marketers that have more followers than people following. I believe I’ll get more interaction and free traffic to my blog when people see that I have more followers than people I follow. If you know of another reason for this, lets all find out by leaving your comment below.
So to keep an eye on your limits. It’s a good idea to unfollow people from time to time. Note that Twitter does not like that you unfollow a whole bunch of people and then right afterwards you follow a whole bunch of people. That’s not how to do it.
When you are reaching a high following mark (you can have your own custom limits, just make sure you know Twter’s) it time to unfollow some people. It could be every two weeks, every week or even every 4 days. It all depends on the rate your following and the way your follower numbers are going, don’t unfollow everyday though. If you have a busy account wait a least 3 days before you unfollow.
Twter is all about establishing yourself as a valuable resource through the content you provide. Then if you have something you want to recommend, people will listen. Think about Twter as sharing information about your niche and you will build very good relationships.
One way to gain respect on Twter is to re-tweet. Meaning if you see a good tweet you like, you can share it with your followers by re-tweeting. Also the person who originally tweeted should thank you and start re-tweeting your tweets, it’s one of the great ways to build relationships. Do this everyday. Go down the timeline and when you spot a good valuable tweet, re-tweet it. Don’t re-tweet junk.
So if you are providing good content people will re-tweet your tweets as well. The more re-tweets the better it is for everyone so you should always be on the look out for good tweets to re-tweet.
Giving a link to your squeeze page in your valuable tweet can truly build your list to provide more valuable content and make sales because if someone re-tweets (shown by a RT in the tweet) your tweet and someone else re-tweets and so on depending on the amount of followers they have your tweet can be exposed to thousands upon thousands of people.
There is nothing wrong with linking to a sales page in your tweet from time to time but I think people are more likely to give you their e-mail address for more information though. Once you have that e-mail address you can sell at the proper time through your auto-responder.
As with any social media DO NOT PROMOTE YOUR BUSINESS first. Think of Twter as a whole bunch of people at a party. You wouldn’t just go up to someone at a party and start pitching your business right off. Talk about anything, get to know each other. Have people get to know you.
Don’t have the attitude that it’s all about you. Don’t constantly send tweets to your stuff online. Send out popular content from good sources. Some places where you can find popular tested content online are:
http://www.stufftotweet.com – find popular content from various social media.
http://www.digg.com - Here you can target your niche and use popular content. Just do a search and use the most dugg button to get the best diggs. You can find the button using the best match tab.
http://www.alltop.com - This is really cool. This site is like a magazine rack you can customize to your needs. This site updates the most popular topics every 24 hours.
When it comes to promoting your own stuff on Twter do more interacting (value tweets, tweeting about other peoples good content) than pitching out your own stuff.
Everyone’s got different views and there is no exact number but to keep things efficient I would say for about every six valuable tweets you offer from other good content, provide one or 2 tweets to your content. Don’t forget Twter is a form of social media, not advertising space.
When on Twter make sure you are following active people. Look at when their last tweet was. You don’t want to be following people who are inactive, it’s just a waste, so keep note.
A good thought being you only have 140 words to use in a tweet is to make your tweets like attention grabbing headlines in a newspaper.
If using a Twter management system- make your tweets stand out by tweeting in blocks of 3 or 4. Make the first 3 tweets good content from various interesting sources and make the last tweet link to your squeeze page or where ever you want in order to monetize. It will show up first in block being that you entered it last.
Tweet your past blog posts titles, don’t forget to shorten the url by using bit.ly just type in bit.ly into your address bar. Don’t use dot com or anything else just bit.ly
Tweet some of the key content in your past blog posts. Don’t forget to shorten the url by using bit.ly
Make sure you make a good amount of tweets with no links in them. (Twter is watching)
Drilling the thought- When do you think is the best time to tweet? http://webanalysis.blogspot.com/2010/07/best-time-to-tweet.html#axzz1I0fIledC
Use a great Twter/ social media management system where you can automate a lot of Twter chores and schedule your tweets so they post in blocks + so much more.
15 is the maxium number of characters you can have in your user name
250 is the number of direct messages you can have in a day.
1000 is the maximum number of tweets you are allowed to make in one day. http://www.mediabistro.com/alltwitter/twitter-limits_b5697
RT means re-tweet
@ means AT- When you want to reply to someones tweet use the @ sign
DM means direct message
It’s best to use the symbols at the end of your tweet so you can read the message first. For example: Hey I really liked that @ twter username OR Want to know when the best time of day is to tweet? [the link] RT
Oh…and once you set up your Twter account don’t forget to share the knowledge in this post. Tweet this post by clicking on the Twitter box on the right hand side at the beginning of this post.

As with all my posts I hope you got something out of it.
So what do you think about Twter and getting some free traffic to your blog, squeeze pages, etc. Share your views by leaving a comment.

Hi Terry,
That was a very informative post (almost a mini tutorial!!)
With some great info shared!
I would ask about the time to tweet comment…
“The best time to tweet is between 9:00am and 3:00pm”
In whose time zones…. LOL
Therefore it could be that the best time to tweet is different for everyone depending on who they are targeting??
But generally – it’s a good idea to tweet at various times to capture the maximum number of readers

Hi Randy,
Thanks so much for your input and your good words. Thanks for pointing out my comment, the best time to tweet is between 9:00am and 3:00pm. That was only an opinion and have corrected it.
I like what you said about tweeting at various times during the day. It makes a whole lot of sense to reach to maximum amount of people on Twitter for maximum ex-poser. Thanks for the eyeopener,

I agree that this is like a mini tutorial. There is one more thing I would like to add, which also influences the number of traffic you may get. So, the rule I follow is to always remember that twitter is a social website, and you have to be social when tweeting there. People hate to read ads like “cool website – visit us at …” or “this is what you need …”. You have to be very creative if you want to attract people to your website.

Hi Alex,
You can’t forget that Twitter is a social website. You said it right that you just can’t sell all the time. Provide value and create as many relationships as you can the more the better, create a following of good people, sort them out. Follow good people as well.
I like posting good quotes that provide good sayings and updates such as tips, links to ideas, good videos, etc.. . People really hate to read adverts every single time they log on to Twitter. They/we get bombarded with ads all the time. Stand out from the crowd and be unique.
Thanks for visiting and leaving a good comment. Hope to see you again Alex,

Hi Terry,
Told you I would pop by!
Great article on Twitter.
I really like it from a niche marketing perspective. I did an experiment a while a go and found that it increased traffic to my niche website.
I only ran the experiment for a bout 6 weeks, & I was impressed.
I am going to do it again as soon as my niche blog has some more content on it.
I am not on twitter enough so I really need to look at automating the process.
Will get there eventually.
Hope all is great
Cheers

Hi Jacinta,
Yes, from a niche marketing perspective Twitter can be a very good source of free traffic, not only that but you can meet a lot of like minded people.
Automating Twitter is good but there is always work to be done with it. Automation just makes Twitter a whole lot easier. Automating and setting up your tweets and forgetting about them is great but it’s the setting up each day that involves work.
One shouldn’t spend too much time on Twitter each day. You can get automation set up in about 15 minutes per day depending on the rate of people coming in to your Twitter.
Replying to people who have reached out to you is important and dose involve some short time as well.
It’s always nice when you stop by my blog. See you soon,

Hi Terry, haven’t you got the twitter bug
As you know i was using viral tweet Builder but they have been suspended, so i may be looking for an alternative management system very soon.
I know that there are many people out there that still don’t rate twitter, but whilst it keeps showing up in my traffic sources i will keep using it and pushing it out.
You’re right about ReTweeting other peoples work, i do it all the time (that i’m at the PC, which isn’t much lately as looking after mum) but it really does help build relationships.
I often have a clear out of those people that don’t share a common interest. Unfortunatley some people follow others just to make the numbers up, so it is good to have a clear out like you say.
I currently follow about 3,800 and have nearly 5,500 following me.
Another tip Terry: When i tweet other peoples blog posts i add a # to the start of the keywords, for example #blogging #article #money etc as this gets the tweets picked up on searches for that keyword.
Great post my friend, i hope all is well your end and i’ll catch you up again very soon.
Respect and Regards, Barry

Hi Barry,
How are you? Always nice to hear from you and have you stop by here. My thoughts go out to you about mum.
I liked Viral tweet builder. Thanks for introducing it to us in your one of your blog posts. As you already know unfortunately something happened between them and Twitter.
If you don’t know already Viral Tweet builder will be opening up a new system in about two weeks as they say. There will be more than just Twitter that you can manage as they say. Lets see what happens. Let see if it’s going to be a good system?
The Twitter management system I mentioned in this post Hootsuite isn’t bad at all. I like it. In fact you can manage more than just Twitter if you want to.
I know Twitter doesn’t sit well with some other marketers. Like it or not it brings in traffic so even if you hate Twitter, a little time spent on it each day doesn’t hurt at all.
I wrote this post so perhaps those marketers who don’t sit well with Twitter may understand that IT BRINGS TRAFFIC! I also wrote this post for those that don’t know anything about Twitter may learn something. I also wrote this post for those who who use Twitter may learn something. This is what this blog is all about helping each-other.
There are a lot of marketers out there who use Twitter and don’t know about the power of re-tweeting. I hope this post lets marketers understand overall the power of Twitter for free traffic thus building your list, making sales and meeting like minded people.
Thanks for the Twitter tips for all the readers here, Barry. Next time I Tweet and do un-follows I will not forget what you said.
Until next time my friend,
Terry Conti

Hi Terry, yes VTB are bringing out a new version in a couple of weeks time, but it will be for fully paid up customers only.
They may introduce another free service in the future but for now their focus is on replacing the application for those people that paid for it in the first place.
Once the free system is in place i’ll be sure to let you know mate.
Another tip: For grabbing someones attention try retweeting a few of their tweets one after the other, about 5 should get them coming over to make contact with you.
I’ll have a look at hootsuite as soon as i get a chance mate, thanks again for the heads up.
Catch up soon Terry, keep up the excellent work my friend.

Hey Fran thanks so much for your compliment about my post. I truly want others to know Twitter and what it can do for them.
Yes, I did write an ebook to sell. It’s almost finished, just have to go over it to make sure it provides exactly what I want. I need to feel it in my gut that it provides the best information I can give. Same goes for the sales page. Still have to do a thank you page though.
If you want to take a look at it I’ll send it to you. I’m thinking of adding videos to it, but not sure. Just get in touch with me through my contact link if you want me to send it to you, I’d like to know what you think. I also would want to know if you would accept my invitation for a testimonial.

Hi Terry,
I was very similar to you when I first started. What is this twitter thing and how can it be utilised to help us with our marketing. But social media is so big.
Twitter and Facebook are the big boys in the game and all the major companies have their own fan page or twitter accounts, so it just works. I mainly use twitter to integrate it with my blog updating any new content I put up.
I also use it to re-tweet all the great content that I come across and help promote other people’s blog like this post and many other blogs I visit.
So I very rarely promote using twitter just get the content out to the masses.
Cheers

Very true Twitter and Facebook are the big boys on the block.
If you are into free traffic they must be used whether you like them or not because they work.
You have the correct way of looking at Twitter Craig. As I’ve stated, I’ve done some homework on the subject and you just can’t promote your stuff all the time. Twitter doesn’t like it and you can lose your account.
You MUST DO MORE OF providing good content by leaving good quotes for example and getting good content from others out to the masses.
All the best to you Craig,

I’m glad you got something you can take with you from my post. I would mess around with Twitter now and see your numbers go up.
Just take about 10 to 15 minutes a day using the information in this post.
By the time you finish your niche site you will have a lot of people on Twitter to promote it to so they in turn can promote it to their followers as well.
If you can spare the time get involved with Twitter now. It takes some time to get your account numbers to go up.
All the best to you Bill,

Hi Terry,
Very informative post! I’m a big believer in RTs and I know how appreciative people are when you RT their tweets. I also try to tweet in blocks, as you’ve mentioned.
As far as best time of day, there’s a site where you can put in your twitter name and it will tell you what time of day you’ve had the most RTs. You can then decide that must be the best time of day to tweet as it’s the time when people are reading and RTing your tweets. I cannot remember the name of it offhand though!
Are you on Triberr yet? If not, I’d be happy to invite you to my tribe. Basically it’s a very subtle automatic RT system. When you post a new blog post, the people in your tribe will automatically RT it… but only once and at varied times through the day, not all at the same time. So it’s like all your tribe’s followers become your followers when you do a new blog post.
Thanks,
Peggy

Hows things?
For me Twitter wasn’t very effective when it comes to free targeted traffic. Facebook still remains my #1.
However, i have just entered the giveaways. Launched my first event on Thursday and within 24 hrs added 76 subscribers to my list, more now as i write this post.
Basically that’s more in 24 hours than i got since i started my coaching with Alex in November using a number of traffic methods. You should give it a try it works

Although, when people click your link in the direct message that is sent to each new follower. That is targeted traffic coming to my blog.
I do agree with you though that Facebook offers more of targeted traffic only because you shouldn’t go for quantity like you do on twitter.
You’ve come up with a great idea here about starting your own giveaway event. Will definitely check into it. Thanks for sharing.

Hey John,
It’s always great to have you here and comment. I like the way you commented. I truly want Twitterers and non Twitterers to understand Twitter so they can use it to their advantage.
Spend a little time each day on Twitter whether you like it or not and get Free Traffic. It’s that simple, but you must understand Twitter first.
When the time comes I hope you get the most out of Twitter. Catch you later John and thank you for the good words.
Later,

Terry,
I love the information of Twitter.
I have an account and it is fairly large but I have never really done anything with it except to follow people and get followers.
I never could really figure out just how to use it and what to put in the tweets. It is so simple think I was making it to hard.
I am going to start spending some time on twitter each day now and try to build some relationships with the people that I am following or are following me and not just grow my account.

I am also so glad that our blog posts helped each other. It’s great that you got good information from my blog post and I got helpful useable information from your blog post as well.
It’s such a wonderful feeling.

Hey Terri,
Great advice here on Twitter, you know it kinda reminds me of google adWords, where you have to be savvy at placing the right targeted mesage within a certain number on the ad!
Of course thats a different platform entirely, getting back to using Twitter, it’s an area I will getinto one day because I do know its a powerful tool for leveraging targeted traffic to your websites, I’ve only just joined Facebook…

Hi Ed,
Thanks for coming by. Thanks for accepting my friend request on Facebook. I hope you join Twitter soon and I’ll follow you. You don’t have to spend a whole lot of time on Twitter each day, most can be automated knowing how to use the right tools.
Catch you later,

Twitter has been good to me. I have had it mostly automated with a wordpress to twitter plugin, social oomph, twellow, and other things. But still, Facebook seems to be my best traffic supplier when it comes to social networks.

Hi Brandon,
Twitter and Facebook seem to be the two most popular social sites out there right now. Everywhere you look you see them. Twitter is good but I agree with you Facebook works better.
As a mentioned in my post with Twitter it’s quantity over quality. Facebook is more targeted.

Terry, I also didn`t want to consider using Twitter at all. But, this is such a popular social site that one can`t underestimate it`s power. As you say, there is a lot of mumbo jumbo unrelevant stuff over there, so putting something with high quality content will sure attract visitors and make extra traffic.

Hi Kristina,
Provide value not only on Twitter but in everything you do especially when it comes to marketing. This will get you known as a marketer who shares great useful knowledge.
There are a lot of marketers out there who do nothing but sell all the time. Stand out from the crowd not only will you generate good traffic but create good relationships as well.

Those people that hate twitter don’t know anything about leverage and automation. You don’t even have to visit Twitter more than once in order to turn it into a traffic source, or money maker. You can setup an autoresponder message with a free 3rd party service, remove non-reciprical followers with little effort, etc.

Hi Brandon,
You’re so right, you can’t set Twitter up where there is very little work to do on your part and have it generate traffic and make sales! Twitter is powerful. Love it or hate it, if you are a marketer and not using Twitter you are missing out.
Thanks for visiting and your input, Brandon,

Terri,

This is a very informative post. I don’t use Twitter a lot, although I am slowly beginning to grasp it. The little amount that I do use it, it seems to send quite a bit of traffic to my site. Twter is worth looking into. Thank you for sharing

Hi Shivam,
Thanks for visiting and commenting Shivam. Your input is very much appreciated. The religion is Internet Marketing. What Internet marketers should know is that social media is only part of the whole and that you should not get involved with too many social sites only because you will overload yourself.
There is a lot involved in Internet Marketing. Social media is one of the many ways to get free traffic. Interested in Free traffic? See my post titled free traffic on this blog. I wish you many good things and thanks again for your input.

Hi Terry
Finally I make it here, I followed your link in the mention you gave me on Twitter that was stored in my Hootsuite account.
One thing about the best time to post is look at the analytics for your destination site. Where are your visitors coming from? Mine tend to come from the USA and India thus my tweet times are plus 6 and minus 6 from GMT, which could make 3pm GMT a good time to tweet.
I did some testing a while back and the life of a tweet was found to be about 20 minutes, the click response tails of to about nothing after this time, of course with automation this could now be extended but I have not repeated this test for a while.
Great post and having multiple accounts allows you to post updates relevant to the topic of that account, which in turn paints you as the expert in that topic as that is all you talk about.
