How to Keep Your Computer Running Smoothly

Hello to all!!

Do you keep your computer running smoothly?   Just like you must change the oil on the car there are certain things that one must do at least every month to make their computer run smoothly.

There are a lot of people out there that don’t have a clue about making their computer run smoothly.  That’s why you see all the marketing out there about making your computer run faster and that’s why I wrote this post.

Is your computer slow?  Go to XXX dot com to get a free analysis.  You get your fee analysis and you find out there is a ton of stuff you need to do to make your computer faster so you pay for the service to fix everything for you.

If  you do it yourself or pay one way or another, you have to do your computer maintenance or else your computer will eventually get slower and slower and crash!  Many times I’ve heard about people complaining about their computer getting slower and slower.  They get a friend over who knows about computers to help fix their computer.

What does the computer geek or friend do before he or she touches anything?  He or she asks when was the last time you did your computer maintenance? Did you clear the cache, defragment, deleted cookies, etc?  You look at him or her like a deer caught in the head lights.  You have absolutely no idea what he or she is talking about.

It can be frustrating for someone who knows computers when you answer “I don’t know”.   It’s like asking a car owner when was the last time he or she changed the oil.  If the answer is “I don’t know” You should know for sure that car isn’t going to last very long at all.

Unlike in the past there are computer programs and windows versions today that will do all the maintenance for you automatically however you can take some time out to do things yourself as well if you don’t have the capability to automate it all.

It’s not as bad as you might think.  If something takes a long time like a virus scan for example you can start the scan before you go to sleep and let it run overnight.  When you awake if all is well, your scan will be done.  I do a total virus scan once a month and so should you.  I’d also like to let you know about this free software on the Internet that will let you keep you computer running smoothly.  It’s called CCleaner.  It-

  • Cleans up temporary Internet files
  • History
  • Cookies
  • Recently typed URL’s
  • Empties the recycle bin
  • Empties old prefetch data
  • Empties the cache
  • Plus so much more

CCleaner also has a registry cleaner.  I would recommend backing up your registry before using the cleaner.  If you follow the prompts, the program will ask you if you want to back up your registry.  It’s easy to do.  The program will create a folder for you.

Be very careful what you delete.  If you don’t know what it is leave it alone.  I delete files that where created from uninstalling programs, you can’t go wrong with those.  Speaking for myself, that’s all the program finds on my computer.

CCleaner is a great program to have to keep your computer running smoothly.  It saves you so much time, instead of doing each individual thing separately yourself.

What do you do to keep you computer running smoothly?  Leave your comment below.  We can all learn a thing or two.  Also comment on what  you think of CCleaner.  We all would like to know.

Please share this post on all your social networks so others can find out how to keep their computer running smoothly.   As always I hope you got something you can use to make your life better from reading this post because  helping each other is what this blog is all about.  Until next time,

Terry Conti

  1. Hi Terry,

I actually done a little maintenance on mine this week. Checked to make sure the running programs are up to date, and I did clear out history and cookies, not sure if it done a complete clean out though, so I will take a look at the site CCleaner.

I’m a bit of a dodo when it comes to the workings of computers and usually rely on someone else to get the job done properly.

    Thanks Terry

    Hi Julie,

How’s it going? I hope all is well. Cleaning out cookies will sure make your computer faster. I don’t know which version of windows you have but it’s also good to defragment your files.

CCleaner will not defragment your files so it’s a good idea to do so. If you don’t know how just hit the start button on your computer and click on- all programs- and click on- accessories- from there click on- system tools- and then on- Disk Defragmenter.

As always thanks for stopping by and commenting,

  2. Hi Terry

Nice gap between the image and text!

Seriously, regarding your post Terry I must admit to not being the best when it comes to maintenance, I leave it mainly to my techie. Although I do now clear the cache, cookies, temporary internet files, browsing history and recycle bin on a regular basis.

It’s a post I am sure many will be interested in and a subject often ignored until disaster strikes.

    Hey there Bill,

Nice gap, wadda you think? This guy emails me out of no where and shows me how to do it. The world most definitely needs more people like that!

CCleaner will do all that you do to your computer at a push of a button saving you time.

Thanks again Bill for showing me how to insert that gap between the words and the picture.

  3. Hi Terri,

I would be one of those clue less people. I will definitely save this post for future reference.

I am doing a bit better than I used to though, at least I run a cleaning software every Saturday morning which gets my computer rid of stuff it doesn’t need.

    Thanks for those tips :)

    Hey Terry,

I learned a long time ago how to make sure my computer is all clean and I run a virus scan once a week, better safe then sorry. I clean my computer up once a month as well so I do it like clockwork.

Great tips because like you mentioned, there are plenty of people that don’t know the first thing about what they should be doing. It sure does help.

    Hi Adrienne,

I feel too many people get computer problems when really they can be avoided.

They may think it’s something complicated when it’s actually not. All you need is easy know how to develop good computer cleaning habits.

  5. Hi Terri,

Great point! And a good reminder. This is something I have been ignoring. My mindset is that I’m safe because I just purchased a new mac. ha ha! What a false mindset.

Actually, I need to be more mindful of this because of my false sense of security.

I think I will follow Sylviane’s method of doing a Saturday cleaning.

    Thanks,

  6. Hello Terry,

I’m using CCleaner from long time so I’ve very good experience with it. Every Sunday morning I perform small check up so that I can know my every program is up to date, running perfectly, and then I run CCleaner to clean all the useless junk files. After that I defragment all my hard drive partitions, run a virus scan and I’m done. Now, my computer is running smoothly and I don’t have worry yo about it for one more week…

BTW, thanks for sharing this guide. :)

  7. Hi Terry,

Great advice here! I do know what to do, but I forget on occasion. It seems though, every time I am away from my computer for a few hours (like running errands for example) the elf (my husband) cleans up after me. When I come back, my computer is cleaned (he does use CCleaner) and defragged :)

So my tip, if you don’t know what to do, or you don’t want to …get an elf :)

Thanks for sharing these great tips, Terry!

Love it! Get an elf :0 At least your elf is using CCleaner, smart elf but I got to tell you Ilka its not that hard if you want to know how to do it. Just ask your elf and I’m sure he’ll show you.

It’s nothing really, just a few clicks. Anyway, Thanks for stopping by, always a pleasure.

  8. Terry,

I love CCleaner. I use it everytime I start my computer. I also use their registery cleaner but do not think it does a really great job. I used to have a paid registery cleaner and it worked much better but became outdated and I did not renew it.

I also run spyware/malware scans as well as virus scans frequently.

A couple of weeks ago I could not get Photoshop to run and it was a piece of spyware that was on my computer keeping it from running. Once I removed the spyware I did not have a problem again.

I think alot of people have not idea that computers need to be maintained like a car and if they aren’t they will just quit.

    Great post.

    Hi Dee Ann,

It’s such a pleasure to see you here over at my place. CCleaner is such a short cut to all the separate things you have to do to keep your computer running smoothly. It’s very good to have!

The registry cleaner does get rid of some stuff but I do agree with you that it could do a better job but I believe it still does something.

People need to know that if you neglect your computer it not a matter of if it will break down on you it’s a matter of when.

See you later DeeAnn always wishing you the very best.

Love that tip, Terry, ‘if you don’t know what it is leave it alone’. I’m sure half my problems in the past have been due to me messing with things I don’t know enough about! Hope 2013 is great for you, Terry.

    Enjoy the journey.

Well hello Terry, I can certainly relate to Mandy’s comment, having destroyed many a registry and boot up sequence in my time. CCleaner is a great service and is one that I used for years, I have now switched over to AVG PC Tune Up.

This does pretty much the same but runs constantly in the background tidying up after the teenager that is Microsoft Windows.

Of course one of the best ways to keep your computer running smoothly is to never Google a question and use the search results, I made that mistake this weekend and ended up spending a whole day removing all sorts of nasties from my computer, instead trust in your online community and just ask others what they use.
