Setting Direction For Your Goals

My last blog post was about the fuel to reach your goals.  I talked about passion, mindset, work in order to reach your goals.  With that said, having all those ingredients will not get you anywhere if you don’t create a structured direction in order to move forward to arrive at your destination.

We as humans have one gift that is taken for granted by most.  We all have the capacity to create.  What do I mean?  I mean we can take nothing and make it something.

We are talented enough to erect buildings, build bridges, build things to suit our needs.  We build things like cars, planes, trains, motorcycles, bicycles  to get us around.  We write books of all sorts to spread information and open the imagination.  We set up businesses and achieve greatness.

Nothing would ever get done if it were not for the setting of Goals and creating a structured plan

Whether we know it or not we all create.  We can create good or we can create bad.  It’s all up to you.  We create a wish, set a plan and achieve what we want, right down to the smallest of things to the most complex.

We all have goals to achieve everyday! Writing this blog post is a small goal achieved.   Getting up in the morning and doing what needs to be done for the day is achieving goals.  If you go about doing what needs to be done in an unorganized way you probably won’t achieve all the goals you set and it will be much harder on yourself to get things done.  We need to create direction.

Planning is Key

Planning is key for everyday living.   Planning and setting small realistic goals is what we do everyday.  Writing things down is very important. Take a grocery list for example.  Say you didn’t write down all the things you need for your family and you find yourself in the supermarket without a list.  How effective would you be in getting all you need right off the top of your head?

This line of thought carries through to setting big goals.  What do you want out of life?  You’ve got to sit down and put the plan all on paper in front of you so you can see it and follow it.  Think and ask yourself what are you going to do?  Isn’t it just too much to keep it all in side your head all at once?

You need something you can visualize,  hold on to and follow.  Following your plan to reach your goals will not be clear cut at certain points.  You might come across road blocks so this is where my last post comes in.  You’ve got to have passion the right mindset and be willing to work.

There are many streets and avenues in your plan.  You’ve got to make order out of it all by writing it all down.   Once written it becomes so much easier to reach your goal.  Just like the grocery list.  A bit more complex but just as effective.

Make realistic short term goals in order to achieve your long term goal.  Keep everything reasonable and real.  A plan such as this must have every detail and have timelines.  Timelines will help in your momentum and make you accountable.

You’ve got to know everything isn’t set in stone.  There will be times that you might have to change some parts of your plan.  The point is that you have a structured foundation to work form.

You must know the night before what it is  you are going to do tomorrow.  It’s all about setting small term goals in order to reach the long term goal.

Again I say, trying to keep it all in your head is just too much.  You have got to write it down in order to create the life you want.  Create direction and you’ll be laying down the tracks leading to your goal.

Have passion, the right mindset, work, create the right direction and enjoy each day.

  1. Terry,

When I was reading your post it made me think of a saying I have heard many times.

“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”

I thought it went very well with what you were saying.

I really agree with you about having lists. It seems that without a list not much seems to get done in the rest of my life or on the internet.

I think planning is something many people fail to do and that is why they are not successful in what they set out to do.

    Great post.

Planning is a must. There is a right way and a wrong way of doing things and if you fail to plan you will not be doing things at your maximum potential.

  2. That’s one of the most basic and sensible posts on goal setting I have read Terry.

We all achieve goals just to get through the day but I must admit the only reason I now write anything down is because I would forget it if I didn’t!

I reached my own goals a few years ago when I retired with enough money to enjoy it, although there are still things I want to achieve but they are not financially motivated.

I think the most important point you make is that ‘everything is not set in stone’. There are times when it’s impossible to meet your targets for whatever reason and a slight deviation is needed.

    Great post Terry.

Right down to the simple tasks to the big ones, if you don’t write down what you are going to do you will have a different outcome.

Life sure does through curve balls. One must always have a good attitude and mindset however one must always be at the ready for those “pitches”

I know what you mean about the comment luv Bill, it happens frequently, don’t know why? I found by unchecking the box and checking again resets it. Like you, I always keep an eye on it.

Until I sat down and wrote out my goals things coasted along.

  6. Great stuff Terry…and target on as far as I am concerned.
You know…taking our thoughts/visions/dreams from their present realm and manifesting them in the physical realm is all about taking that action step.
I believe that writing down our goals/visions is actually putting in motion energy that starts the process of bringing these things to us in the physical realm.

It is a powerful act…that starts things rolling and once the energy is on paper, it is easy to refer to to keep motivated…which will carry us through those dark spots you mentioned.

Thanks for reminding me of how powerful this step is!

like you say : Planning is on first place ! Yes, it is. And when I look back, I can see that I’m working today-now much better, faster and with “something in my head”. I still have some holes in my day planning but this is because I want to do everything in one day. And I have just 24h day in front of me every day, like you and others. So, I must do more on this, and plan better my work day, which is mostly 4-5h (effectively).

Your post is an important factor for a balanced living. There are so many things to be done and there is so less time that Planning and goal setting both are extremely important to achieve the results that everyone wants.

I agree with Kathy D. in the comment section 100% that planning and writing goals is the start of the achieving process. Keeping any eye on goal setting and creating the short term goals for smaller steps, creates an evaluation report of your goals that tells you how much is done and how many steps to go for the final results.

Make it a Super Profitable week for your online & Offline business activity.

The way time and the way our lives get crazy, planning makes life easier to deal with and get things done in a more effective way than if you just went ahead and did things without a plan. It’s essential to pre think and write down what your game plan is going to be.

Then starts the achieving process. Thank you very much for your good wishes Fran, I wish the same for you.

  12. Hey Terry

Thanks for the video you shared on my facebook, vroom vroom, I loved it!

I used to HATE planning, probably because I would sit there with a blank page and not know what I should be planning!

But I am big fan of Tony Robbins and have been reading a lot of his books lately and got a ton of planning skills now.

I don’t plan too far ahead, I know people say you should have a year plan, but that’s too much for me, I plan around six months ahead and then I will re-evaluate when I get there.

Great post, without planning or goals you have nothing to aim for, Alex Jeffreys used to say if you are not planning – you are planning to fail lol.

    Hi Sally,

vroomm, vroom back at ya. Tony Robbins now helps many people get their lives in order. I read a book of his and living in a small bachelors apartment he also was in a situation where planning was a chore. As a matter of fact his life was a chore. Goes to show if we all apply ourselves we can get out of any hardship.

Yea I don’t plan far far in advance either. I believe cutting it down to a reasonable amount makes it easier to manage your outlook.

Everyone’s different, I’ve learned there are many ways to do certain things. Do what works for you. The main thing is that you DO IT!!!!

Without planning or goals you certainly don’t have anything to aim for. You just can’t take a car and get in start the engine and not know where you’re going or what you’re doing.

You need a thought process. Take your thought processes and write them down so you’ll know better where you want to bring your business. Like Alex says “if you are not planning- you are planning to fail”.

I don’t think that we need to make a perfect plan before we begin, but I do think we should make some sort of strategy so that we know we are going in the right direction. I like your idea of setting small realistic goals. By creating unrealistic goals, we are inviting frustration into our lives. By achieving small goals, we are inviting momentum that carries us forward. Thanks for the boost!

  16. Hi Terry, I hope you’re well my friend.

You’re absolutley right about writing things down. Our focus and attention is all to easily distracted and we do tend to forget things. Whether that be online, offline or like you said with our grocery lists. Some of us have better memories than others but none of us can remember everything that needs to be done. We all need to makes notes as we go.

The art then comes in arranging those notes to form a plan which you have covered very well here Terry. Planning Is Key to every form of success, be that on or off line. We often think that we are planning by holding thoughts in our heads and having an idea of direction but the truth is we don’t!

Before taking part in the Masterclass I spent just over 2 years going in circles. I had a website online and would go from one task to another and never really join the dots up to get a complete picture. Simply because I had no structured plan to follow, I would just get to the PC and think “right where was I” and pick up where I left off, which was probably going in the wrong direction

Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving your comment, it is very much appreciated. Having a well rounded view about achieving success is key to getting what you want out of life.

  24. I’ll tell you what. I never remember the “writing it down” part. I remember everything else though, so no problems with that. Direction needs motivation though, and I don’t always have that.

    Hi Brandon,

Thanks for visiting and leaving your honest input. It is much appreciated. Everybody has got their own way of doing things. Curious to know, not being negative to you in any way. You say you have no problem getting things done without writing anything down.

How do you remember everything to do in detail when running your business? How do you plan? After you finish a task or project, do you go OK what’s next? Are there times you forget something with so much to do or a detail you needed to add in? I say this because I know I would not be at peak performance if I didn’t follow what I’m preaching.

I have just too many things I want to put into action and need to see the steps (the plan) in front of my face and change them accordingly if need be, of course. Time for blog hopping, things I need to do for my eBook creation, blog, thank you pages, sales page, Face book, create Fan pages, squeeze pages, Twitter, write a free report, set up email campaign on and on and on. For me I need to put it all out in front of me.

Also I’m in the restaurant biz and if I didn’t take (write down) reservations my whole dinning room would turn into chaos for example or when I have 50 plus people I need to draw out a lay out on how to set up the dinning room.

Anyway like I said before Brandon everyone’s got their own way of doing things. What works of one may not work for another. The point is staying organized.

I set myself a schedule by writing it all down and planning. I believe is easier to get things done and move forward toward your goals because you set your self to follow and details aren’t missed. Sort of like setting up dots and then connecting the dots. Changing the dots you set up if need be.

About the second part of your comment Brandon, you’ve got to think about your results to motivate you when you don’t feel motivated. Life isn’t always cherry and yes there are times when things are a pain in the rear but I do my best, I’m sure you do too.

  25. There are different types of goals: strategic – intermediate -immediate. First of all you should set a strategic goal. And it will dictate your intermediate ones. Intermediate goals, in their turn, will determine immediate ones and the ways of their achievement. Without such hierarchy you business (and not only) activity will look like a mess.

  26. Love the tips! Thanks for sharing In conclusion, the most important thing for us to do just now is to make continuous progress. Keep moving in the direction of your goals all the time, and keep your mental focus in that direction. The progress you will then make will speak for itself.

  27. Hi Terry,

I have to admit, planning is not the best thing i’m good at, and i’m aware this is a big disadvantage in my line of work. I’ll try to follow some of your advices, starting with writing it down on paper.
Then i’ll see where this takes me. Please write more on the subject when you have the time.

    Thanks, Martin

It’s hard to start writing down things when you’ve never done that before. But it’s probably worth it on the long run.

  28. Hi Terry, I love your post. It’s very important to set a plan to reach our goals, furthermore, we need to write our plan on paper all the time. Some time ago I read the phrase “think on paper” and I always remember it :)

    Hi Melanie,

I really like the way you put it, “think on paper” Having it all out in front of you is much better than juggling the whole thing around in your brain.

  29. I am used to having a planner or organizer every year which I can write all my daily tasks and goals to achieve. At the end of the day, I feel so productive looking at the tasks checked and goal achieved. Thanks for your tips!

    Hi Bob,

That’s what I call working smart, being the best you can be. When you think about production getting things done and having a sense of fulfillment it sure beats trying to do things that are all lined up in your head. It’s a no brainier!

Thanks for visiting and commenting. Keep on keeping on Bob,
